Dance styles and class information

Belly Dance Beginner/Absolute Beg.
Class description
Want to shake it like Shakira?! Come along to Beginners Belly Dance where you will learn the basics to get you moving your hips with hypnotic rhythm. This class will get you familiar with the Middle Eastern beats, strengthen your posture, tone your abs, increase your co-ordination as well as your confidence and importantly you will have a load of fun whilst loosing your inhibitions! No experience necessary - learn something new and fun every week!
What to wear
Dress-up and play the Princess part! Come to class in a fitted or mid-driff baring top - basically something that will allow you to see the movements of your stomach to ensure you are doing the moves correctly. Comfy pants or skirt. A long silky scarf that can be tied around your hips. Bare feet. Towel. Water.

Belly Dance Intermediate
Class description
This is a class for those of you who have either been belly dancing for several months elsewhere or who have been attending my Beginner classes and are ready to move those hips to faster and more intricate rhythms.
You will need to know the basics of belly dance technique including, hip drops, flicks, shimmies, figure 8’s and camels – this will allow us to warm-up and get right into dancing and learn how to layer other moves on-top of the basics. Expect to learn fast and exciting Tabla (Arabic drum) choreographies – with plenty of opportunities to perform!
What to wear
Dress-up and play the Princess part! Come to class in a fitted or mid-driff baring top - basically something that will allow you to see the movements of your stomach to ensure you are doing the moves correctly. Comfy pants or skirt. A long silky scarf that can be tied around your hips. Bare feet. Towel. Water.

Bollywood
Class description
An energetic class that will have you swaying to the latest Bollywood movie tunes with kitsch themes and boppy moves. In this class you will learn the moves inspired from the Bollywood movies. It is a unique blend of Classical Indian dance, Funk and primarily Bhangra (from the Punjab region of India). Think Monsoon Wedding meets Jessica Alba!
What to wear
Stretchy dance gear or comfortable exercise wear. Track pants and T-shirt OK. Barefeet or thin soled sneakers or jazz shoes OK.

Booty Dance
Class description
Radiate the confidence and sensuality as seen by the likes of Shakira and Beyonce on the dance floor. This class is strictly for booty dancing in clubs. Starting with a warm up and stretch, we then explore all manner of movement for your sexy booty and release your inner sex kitten. It is surprisingly easy and lots of fun. Suitable for all dance levels and for anyone who wants to gain confidence in nightclub dancing.
What to wear
Comfortable fitting or loose clothes. T-Shirt, sneakers or Jazz shoes.

Brazilian Samba
Class description
In this class, you will learn the basic of Samba and Samba-Reggae and some Axe moves. Steps will be broken down without sacrificing the fun and the energy of Brazilian Dance. This is a fun energetic dance class encompassing the spirit of carnaval. Learn the basic samba step along with many other vibrant, fast paced, sensual movements of Brazilian dance.
What to wear
Stretchy dance gear or comfortable exercise wear. Basically you need something that won't limit your range of motion. For shoes it is best to wear sneakers or dance shoes without heels. You can also dance barefeet even though you will lack a bit of support. Bring extra clothes for after the class and bring some water because you will sweat.

Break Dance
Class description
Learn the essentials to become a B-Boy or B-Girl. From top rockin and drops, to floor rocks and freezes, expert breakers will teach participants the foundation of the dance in structured lessons. The beginner level is fun and easy with no experience is needed. For Intermediate level, previous break dance experience required.
What to wear
Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing - track suit, long pants (no shorts please) and t-shirt are fine. Also please try to wear none marking shoes i.e. white soles.

Burlesque
Class description
As Dita Von Teese once said " Burlesque is an attitude". In this class you will learn sexy, slow controlled dance moves to unleash the vixen within. Fine tune your sexy strut.. Get your booty bouncing whilst always making the most of your womanly assets. Each week we will be dancing to mellow and smooth tunes by artists like D'Angelo, Angie Stone, Mos def and old school artists Nina Simone and Etta James. So, don't be shy, come down for a giggle and a bump n Grind.
What to wear
Please wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and that do not restrict movement, and of course ladies, don’t feel shy to wear your frills, heels and lace!!

Contemporary/Lyrical
Class description
Contemporary Dance, like Contemporary Art, is an experimental art form, always evolving and pushing boundaries. In this class you will learn basic Contemporary techniques and concepts to help you gain awareness of your body, with a strong focus on improving posture, alignment, strength and flexibility. This class is open to beginners and those who want to improve their general dance technique whatever style you may be interested in. Combined with the soulful expression of Lyrical this is a class that encompasses mind, body and spirit.
What to wear
Comfortable fitting or loose clothes. T-Shirt, sneakers or Jazz shoes.

Creative Latin Dance
Class description
Learn not only to Salsa, but also to move to the best of Merengue, Afro-Peruvian and Latin Hip Hop. This class is open to everyone. You will learn in a relaxed and non competitive atmosphere. Lots of laughing... Dance is for every one, wether you Dance for healing purpose, to have fun or to be sexy.
What to wear
Wear comfortable clothes, soft soled shoes, dance shoes or small heels.

Dancehall basics
Class description
DanceHall has become known to be a rough immensely catchy street style of reggae "riddims". It is the centre of the Jamaican ghetto youth's lifeworld, a place for enjoyment, cultural expression, survival and spiritual renewal. This is a fast-moving, feverish, "spiritual" class with an emphasis on strengthening technique and expression in the "black contemporary" style, tracing traditional dancehall steps and bringing it into a modern context as seen in the videoclips of Missy Elliott, Kelis, Janet Jackson, The Black Eyed Peas and Sean Paul.
What to wear
Comfy clothes, baggy pants, bare feet or trainers. Bring towel, water, attitude and a burning desire.

Dancehall Hip Hop
Class description
Fun and easy class where you can learn trendy Dancehall and Hip Hop moves. Dancehall Hip Hop consists of dynamic movements with an element of groove. Hip Hop music such as DMX and G-Unit and Reggae music such as Sean Paul and Elephantman are often used.
What to wear
Comfy clothes, tights or baggy pants, bare feet or sneakers.

Funk/Street Funk
Class description
Funk dancing is the perfect fusion of styles, incorporating jazz roots into a melting pot of hip hop, break, popping and locking, along with other fashionable dance genre.
This beginner funk class works to increase fitness, strength and flexibility through a range of easy exercises. The class also uses simple progressions and break down of various steps. This gives students the chance to learn great dance moves, develop a funky dance style (which you can brandish on the dance floor at your favourite clubs), and boost confidence. Each class involves learning a dance routine, set to popular music. No previous dance experience is required.
What to wear
Wear clothing that won’t restrict your movement. T-shirts, trackies sneakers, trainers or jazz shoes.

Absolute Beginner Funk
Class description
Let your hair down and get in touch with the funk-y dancer within. This class is designed specifically for beginners who possess plenty of enthusiasm and a passion for Rnb, Soul, Hip Hop/Funk, Pop and Rock music.
The class begins with an easy-to-follow series of freestyle moves designed to get your heart rate up, followed by stretching, a fun routine, concluding with a relaxing warm down.
Boogie down to the latest hits plus the occasional blast from the past in a fun environment where everyone is on the same wavelength. Absolute Beginner Funk is a fantastic cardio workout guaranteed to improve coordination and skyrocket your confidence on the dance floor.
What to wear
Feet: Gym shoes, sneakers, running shoes or jazz sneakers.
Body: Loose fitting gym pants/tracksuit pants with a stretchy singlet top or t-shirt.

Funk/Hip Hop Beg. - Vincent De Vega
Class description
Get Funk'd up in this class learning the hottest new dance moves from your favourite hip hop/rnb/pop music film clips. This is a beginner class. Steps and routines are broken down until everyone gets it. New dance routines are taught every week to the funkiest tunes. This is a good introductory class to Funk and Hip Hop. So whether you want to make a start in the dance industry, build up your confidence for the dance floor or just want to have fun, come down and join us. Try to arrive early to stretch and warm up as the main focus of this class is dancing and only light stretches are carried out during class time.
What to wear

Funk/Hip Hop Intermediate - Vincent De Vega
Class description
Get Funk'd up in this class learning the hottest new dance moves from your favourite hip hop/rnb/pop music film clips. This is a Intermediate class for people who are comfortable with Funk and Hip Hop. It is moving faster than the beginner one. New dance routines are taught every week to the funkiest tunes. So whether you want to make a start in the dance industry, build up your confidence for the dance floor or just want to have fun, come down and join us. Try to arrive early to stretch and warm up as the main focus of this class is dancing and only light stretches are carried out during class time.
What to wear
Wear comfortable clothing, sport shoes, and protective straps (if you are prone to knee or ankle injuries).

Funk/Hip Hop for the youth
Class description
This class is for youth 9-15yrs old. The class starts off with a strength and style building warm up, moving into routines that you would expect to see in video clips.
What to wear
Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers.

New skool Hip Hop
Class description
This class starts with warm-up, stretch and isolation. You will learn some Hip Hop steps as well as some popping and locking and how to integrate these moves in a New Skool choreography. There will be a choreography at the end of the class. The choreography will change every week. This class is best suited for beginners but is open for everyone.
What to wear
Street gear that you can move easily in, must wear street/runners or dance shoes, also be prepared to sweat.. so either wear layers or bring a change of clothes!

Hip Hop/RnB
Class description
This class starts off with a strength and style building warm up, moving into routines that you would expect to see in video clips. New Routine every week. Style inspired by artists such as Busta Rhymes, Methodman, Black Eyed Peas and Australian Hiphop.
What to wear
Street gear that you can move easily in, must wear street/runners or dance shoes, also be prepared to sweat.. so either wear layers or bring a change of clothes!

Hip Hop
Class description
Stretch and strength building exercises combine to create a light body workout to warm up all your muscles. Following is a short hip hop routine influenced by performance from Usher,Janet,B2K and Justin Timberlake. No experience or previous training is needed, just a good attitude and a will to get fit and have fun!!
What to wear
Sport shoes/sneakers are best and casual, comfortable clothing that will not restrict any movement (eg, pants, cargo's, t-shirts,singlets etc.) Bring a bottle of water and a light jacket to warm up in and to put back on after class (mostly during the cold weather).

House
Class description
House Dancing is a street dance style known for its fancy footwork, groove, turns and grace. It is a distinct style that incorporates steps and rhythms from other dances such as tap and jazz, as well as African and Latin dances. This feature makes house dancing a truly free style that is sensual, energetic and fun!
What to wear
Sport shoes/sneakers, comfortable clothing that will not restrict any movement.

Latin Funk
Class description
Latin Funk is basically a Funk class with an infusion of Latin, motown and street seventies beats. More like a dance party this class will have you jumping around to high energy routines, moves and grooves. Expect everything from top forty to Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and Jamiroquai. Be prepared to sweat and smile....
What to wear
Comfortable sports shoes or jazz shoes. Comfortable gym or sport attire.

Popping
Class description
This class concentrates on popping moves. You will also learn basic dance moves, easy to execute so that you can have a good time while dancing in clubs.
What to wear
Please wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and that do not restrict movement. Track pants or loose pants, T-shirt. Sneakers or jazz sneaker OK.

Reggaeton
Class description
Reggaeton's origins come from Panama and Puerto Rico fusing modern hip hop/dance hall movement with latino rhythms and loads of sexy style. With it's popularity rapidly on the rise world wide, you won't want to miss out on this captivating craze! This class has a strong focus on body isolations, increasing movement and flexibility through a combination of hot and energetic routines. No partner is required and beginners and first-timers are welcome as well.
What to wear/bring
Comfortable exercise wear, something that won't limit your range of motion. Dance shoes or trainers. Bring towel and water because you will sweat.

Salsa Beginner - Fernando Ebony
Class description
A Salsa class like no other. You will learn the basic step of Salsa, partnering up in the class you will learn series of combination. This class is relaxed and non competitive.
What to wear
Leather soled shoe is best for easy turning - either with or without a heel - shoes that stay on (not slip off), sneakers OK. Comfortable clothing, pants, dress, skirt or dance/workout gear - nothing too tight that will restrict movement.

Salsa Intermediate - Fernando Ebony
Class description
A Salsa class like no other. You will learn series of more complicated and intricate combination. Some Rueda basics as well and emphasis on styling and fluidity. This class is relaxed and non competitive.
What to wear

Salsa beginner - Sky Blue, Picante Latin Dance
Class description
Learn to feel the rhythm and energy of authentic Street Latin. In this class you will discover the basics of Salsa and Merengue through a unique and clear teaching technique which focuses on movement and progresses to steps and partner work. You will gain confidence to dance as an individual and with partners. Expressive, sexy, fun and suitable for students with no previous experience.
What to wear
Wear comfortable clothes, soft soled shoes, dance shoes or small heels.

Salsa & Rueda Intermediate - Sky Blue, Picante Latin Dance
Class description
This class is for students who have mastered the basic rhythm and steps of Salsa and Merengue and are confident with leading and following or students who have been to at least 4 Picante Latin Dance beginner classes or who are transferring from other Intermediate Salsa classes. This class includes Salsa, Shines and Cuban Rueda. Expand your Salsa skills, become a more confident dancer and have fun!
What to wear
Wear comfortable clothes, soft soled shoes, dance shoes or small heels.

Salsa Beginner - Guillermo
Class description
Discovering Latin Rhythms with Christina and Guillermo+ Guests Instructors.
In this class, you will learn to differentiate and dance to the most popular Latin rhythms: Salsa, Merengue, Samba, Bachata, Cumbia and Cha Cha Cha. You'll also learn the history of each type of dance and will receive a complimentary music CD to practice at home. Main focus will be towards Salsa Dancing.
What to wear
Some kind of leather soled shoe is best for easy turning - either with or without a heel - shoes that stay on (not slip off). Comfortable clothing, pants, dress, skirt or dance/workout gear - nothing too tight that will restrict movement.

Salsa Intermediate - Guillermo
Class description
Salsa Intermediate with Cristina and Guillermo.
If you already know how to execute the basic Salsa steps and some complicated figures and patterns, now is time to start dancing! In this class, you will learn music interpretation, footwork, styling and new turns! Also you'll receive a complimentary CD to practice at home.
What to wear
Some kind of leather soled shoe is best for easy turning - either with or without a heel - shoes that stay on (not slip off). Comfortable clothing, pants, dress, skirt or dance/workout gear - nothing too tight that will restrict movement.

Showgirl Dance
Class description
The Showgirl class captures all the glamour and fantasy of classic exotic and burlesque dance techniques. We will explore the art of lapdance, striptease, exotic dance, and burlesque styles. This class will strengthen and tone your muscles. It is playful, sensual, and empowering and gives you a chance to release your inner sex kitten in a supportive environment. Let the genie out of the bottle and discover the power of the enchantress.
What to wear
Stretchy and comfy gear. Heels, hotpants and sparkles are fun but not essential. Bring mat or towel for the floor work.

Tahitian Dance
Class description
In this class you will not only discover a new dance but also a new culture. You will learn the basics of Tahitian dance and choreographies on traditional Tahitian songs and drum dances. A little bit of the culture of the wonderful Tahiti will be introduced.
What to wear
A sarong is recommended or if you do not have one, a skirt is OK. Bare feet OK.

Technical Jazz
Class description
A fast paced class that focuses on dancing your best. Ideal for all dancers! Technical Jazz will warm you up with attention to core strength and flexibility. Then it's on to turns and kicks, focusing on placement and balance. Practice progressions across the floor, using new steps and skills. Learn a dance combination to the hottest music at the end of each class utilizing all these elements.
What to wear
Whatever you feel comfortable in. You are going to move, stretch, and sweat.

Urban Style Funk
Class description
Urban Style Funk fuses Urban Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk and RnB and is Michele's signature style. Learn a short warm up, kool practice moves and an energetic routine full of fresh, street smart choreography, dancing to the most current urban Hip Hop and Pop music. Michele incorporates the use of body mechanics, musicality and distinctive performance techniques to help you become a better dancer. Her classes are relaxed as she accommodates all levels. So, If you are all about hard work, dedication and fun, then this class is tailor made for you.
What to wear
Comfortable sports shoes or jazz shoes. Comfortable gym or sport attire.

 

Floating classes

Afro-Brazilian
Class description
In Brazil Dancing is also part of religious ceremonies. In this workshop, you will learn some of the steps associated with the main Orixas (spirits). This is an energetic dance workshop as well as a cultural experience.
What to wear
Wear stretchy or loose clothing. Sneaker or bare-feet OK.

Afro-Latin
Class description
This class takes you on a voyage of Afro-Latin beats. You warm up in Cuba, peak in Brazil and cool down in Peru. Most Afro dance is high energy and isolates different body parts. Learn to utilise your body to its full potential! You will learn the cultural and spiritual background of certain dance moves. The class is suitable for all levels and absolute beginners are treated with care. Feel the rhythmic elixir that is Afro-Latin dance!
What to wear
Wear stretchy or loose clothing. Sneaker or bare-feet OK.

Capoeira (Beginners and First Timers)
Class description
Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form, which incorporates acrobatics rhythm and music, fun, fitness and self-defence in an alternative martial art. This class is for beginner capoeirista or first-timers intrigued by this art form.
In this class you will learn basic movements such as "the Ginga", kicks and defensive moves (esquivas).
What to wear
Please wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and that do not restrict movement. Track pants or loose pants, T-shirt. Bare-foot, sneakers or jazz sneaker OK.

Gogo Dance
Class description
Did you love the musical Dusty? Do you love the tunes of the 60’s? Want to GET DOWN and sweat? Then this class is for you! You will start with warm ups, body isolations and trademark 60’s steps such as the monkey, the Egyptian, the twist, the Watusi and more! Learn to relax into your own rhythm and discover your inner go-go! You will work up to a racy routine that is sure to give you a good workout and good fun!
What to wear
Flat shoes (court shoe or jazz), 3/4 capri pants or mini skirt or stretch jazz pants.

East African
Class description
So what exactly is African dance? It’s vigorous, its graceful, its playful, its mystical; it is a mix of various styles of dance from the Eastern region of Africa. Most of the moves consist of waist, shoulder, back and arm moments. Not all the moves are forceful and vibrant, as most people would think. Many consist of gentle sways and taps that require utmost concentration and grace to perform well. Chichi’s style of teaching goes beyond just the physical but also into understanding the tone and life of the song/beat. She will train you on expression and poise - a real treat for the senses!
What to wear
Dress - comfortable leggings or loose fitting clothes. Please bring a sarong that can be tied around your waist. Dance is done barefooted.

Indian Classical (Kuchipudi)
Class description
Indian classical dance has exotic choreography, expression and rhythms. The classical style has grace, speed, and elegant hand gestures. It draws from a rich source of Indian myths. Demystifying Indian dance for the Western audience is Vimala Sarma approach to classical Indian dance. The class incorporate gentle yoga and Pilates stretches as warm-up, simple footwork to basic rhythms and hand gestures. The class will develop and understanding of Indian classical dance, comprising both expressive and pure dance aspects. Have fun while getting fit and flexible and learning about the rich culture of India.
What to wear
Wear something comfortable which allows you to move freely.

Jazz
Class description
Incorporates basic to advanced jazz techniques. Smooth, slick and strong exercises and routines, fun travelling combinations to a range of music, everything from Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, Hip Hop, old school grooves and Jazz. The class will emphases on learning the skills of a professional dancer while still having fun and looking good. Suitable for beginners and well as more advanced dancers.
What to wear
Bring your own mat. Strechy clothes, tights, or track pants tshirt... Jazz shoes or runners...ok

Legs, Bums and Tums- stretching/yoga
Class description
A class designed to stretch, tone and elongate your body. Using a variety of music and a mix of exercises to strengthen and manipulate your body from deep into the muscles and skeletal system which will make it look and feel amazing. Expect better posture, stronger leaner muscles, increased flexibility, mobility, balance and body awareness. You will strengthen and stretch your body at the same time with mostly low-impact exercises. The exercises and music used are varied and carefully put together so won't get bored or tired. Legs bums and tums is designed to make you look and feel wonderful during class and after!
What to wear
strechy clothes, tights, tshirt... Bring a mat or towel if possible...

Locking
Class description
Fun and easy dance class where you can learn funky dance moves. LOCKING style consists of sharp movements with an element of groove. Soul and funk music such as James Brown, Kool and the Gang and Earth Wind and Fire.
What to wear
Street gear that you can move easily in, must wear street/runners or dance shoes, also be prepared to sweat.. so either wear layers or bring a change of clothes!

Polynesian Dance
Class description
Are you ready for a hip shaking work out? Explore the Pacific Islands and learn the vibrant Hula of Hawaii or the Siva of Samoa, the rhythms of Tahiti, Cook Island, Fiji, Tonga and more, incorporated together in an hour session of Polynesian dancing. Polynesian Dance encompasses the essence of the Tropical Pacific Islands through sharp lower hip movement with graceful upper body motion and the drum beats of the South Pacific accompanied by the voices of Polynesia. So for FUN come along to a dance class and bring friends! Beginners Welcome.
What to wear
Loose clothing and bring a sarong. Bare feet OK.

Swing
Class description
Swing is a partner dance that was born from music of the same name in New York city around the 1930's. This lively form of dancing grew and evolved and today is still popular all over the world. "West coast" swing is a cool, sophisticated style of swing dancing which is done mainly to smooth jazz and blues, but can cross over into Rock n Roll, Pop and Country rock. In this class, you will learn both East-Coast and West-Coast styles.
No partner needed. Beginners welcome.
What to wear
Light clothing. Street or jazz shoes, trainers are ok. No slip-ons or bare feet.

Tango
Class description
Tango is one of the fastest growing partner dances from South America and is enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels. In recent years Argentine Tango has seen a huge resurgence in popularity all around the world, and there is now tango dancing in Sydney clubs and hotels every night of the week. This class will teach you the basic fundamentals, technique, musicality and partnering skills essential for dancing tango in a social setting. You may the attend the classes on a casual basis, and absolute beginners can start any week. No partner required.
What to wear
Light, comfortable clothing and regular street shoes with a leather sole (slip-ons, thongs and trainers are not suitable). Ladies should wear heeled shoes with ankle strap support and closed toes.

And also:
Afro Cuban, Argentine Tango, Gafiera, Pagode, Lambada, Zouk, Soukou, Latin Funk... and any other dance styles.
